New York is an biweekly magazine with an online audience of more than 42 million unique visitors per month. Originally founded with a particular emphasis on New York, the magazine has evolved and increased writing political and cultural satires of national significance. During my role as a Product Designer at New York, I have worked on TheCut Redesign (recognized as the website redesign of 2018 by SPD), the editorial / e-commerce experience, our open-source CMS Clay, as well as revamping the reading experience across verticals.
Redesigned The Cut mobile first, with a new logo, better reading experience, more attractive ad placement, and the visual authority to reflect the breadth & depth of topics covered as the vertical grew from it's original focus on fashion.
Working with various stakeholders, we sorted hundreds of headlines into 4 core values (Style, Self, Culture, Power) and tailored design solutions to our editorial strengths—letting the typography speak for our literary underpinning, and the photography for style.
Clay is an open source WYSIWYG CMS developed by New York Magazine, also powering Slate. After working in Clay myself, I interviewed writers, editors & photo editors to identify pain points in their workflow and aligned with the development team on priorities. I designed a version upgrade so Clay is enhanced by hover but not dependent on hover for mobile editing and accessibility. With better information architecture, user flow & experience, understandable interface copy, a performance boost and new features, our writers, editors & photo editors were much happier.
